Hi,

Is anyone here a knitter?
I don't know how to knit but I've been thinking it might be kind of fun to learn.
I think it might be fun to knit sweaters in the styles and colors I like.
Is knitting clothes complicated?

Thanks.

OMG! I want to re-learn it too! I used to knit, crochet and do needlepoint when I was a young teen. My granny taught me and she and I would sit and do our projects together. I know I could pick it up again if I tried. It was very relaxing and a lot of fun. Maybe one of these days ...

Autumn07, a friend of mine taught himself to knit with one of those "how to" kits from a big box store and says it is very relaxing. He didn't find it hard--the main requirement is patience, he says. He knits awesome stuff, too.

Twinkle Toes, that is a great memory to have.

It's easy and fun. Just get a how-to book out of the library, some medium sized needles and some yarn and just practice until you get the basic knit, purl. Once you know that, you can make anything.

I can knit scarves, but haven't learned any more than that. I think my next project is going to be a pair of socks if I get up the guts to try :P

I can't seem to get the hang of it, or forget the steps. Have tried repeatedly, and started several pieces but they just sit in my basket. Even took classes several times! I know is supposed to be relaxing, but makes me very anxious, then I make too many mistakes. Arghhh..... My grandmother did such beautiful work, also crocheted and tatted, etc. Those skills lost on me. But will continue to make an effort.

I have been knitting for the last couple of years. I started making afgans and scarves. Then worked up to socks and hats. I am now working on my first sweater for my son. I have picked up a couple of how to books and Knitting for dummies. For me the hardest part was casting on. I still don't do it quite right but it gets the yarn on the needle and stays put so that is all that matters. Michaels or your local knitting shop hold classes. I think if you went into the local yarn shop and asked how to get started they would be glad to help you. (Future customer right)

I love knitting. It is very relaxing and if you are doing an easy pattern can be very mindless. This year everyone is getting a scarf for christmas from me.

On a side note... if anyone lives on the south side of Houston, can you recommend a yarn shop that is not on the opposite side of town?

There are a couple of nice locally owned shops here, I should look into classes, again. I only know a few stitches, knit and pearl, etc. Have several unfinished scarves and would like to get them done.

Thumbs up Knitting For Dummies

I tried learning to knit when I was in my early 20's but the booklet I had didn't do a good job of explaining the how-to's. In my mid 30's I bought "Knitting For Dummies" & in a year I was knitting the red turtleneck that was featured in the book. Of course I didn't realize it was short-waisted so I can't wear it. But I keep it b/c it's the first sweater I ever knit. I've been knitting for 5 years now. This year I'm learning to knit socks using the "magic loop" method. Next year I hope to have 16 pairs of socks made for my nieces & nephews for Christmas. After that I want to learn to do Fair Isle knitting with the pictures & color changes. I just wish I had this book when I was in my 20's.

I knit basic scarves and baby blankets. I want to try more, but have a hard time keeping count of the patterns, lol. I watch tv when I knit and if my kids are up I lose count easily. I have seen some cute hats, mittens, and socks that I want to try.
