I've heard of it, but it appears my knowledge is on par with your knowledge. Of course, I am curious about it but think I'll stay with the Medieval reenactment.
Sure, the local gun range I go to has acres of land, last time I was there they were the Germans vs Soviets, all with appropiate weapons, gear and uniforms.Heard alot of rat tat tat with blanks going off in the woods.
Have you seen the price on WW2 weapons, knives, gear, uniforms and stuff?.....it's getting pricey which why some of these use repro-items instead.
BTW,many ranges have live fire rifle matches for WW2 era rifles, such as the Garand match, and Mauser matches.
I've heard of this, it must be way harder to do because it's not simply carrying around replicated muskets and a few cannon, but tanks, halftracks, etc...but a few rich guys do own reconditioned old Sherman's. I also don't see it as being as viewer friendly as ancient and civil war combat was more about soldiers in column formation marching towards each other vs. the combined arms tactics of WW2.
I don't see it being as widespread because of the difficulty of replicating the equipment.
Wars are necessary to keep the peace...and to remember history so as not to repeat it...I have guns and like the history presented as reality in a tangible form...Documentaries and airshows, history museums
I just have a hard time seeing the sense of replication of this stuff...but some folks just get their rocks off on this...
How about civil rights reenactments? That would be twisted...or the Bosnian conflict...they do it for real it seems every 50 years...
What other countries beside ours that perform war reenactments on their own soil??
Now they even have Vietnam reenactments
Okay...wheres the napalm? The agent orange (probably they can use an old Huey to drop orange Kool-Aid dye on em) Any Asians participating??
I've seen Civil War reenactments, but none from any of the other wars. I guess it doesn't surprise me, though, since there are history buffs of all eras. Besides that, grown men just want to relive their childhood by dressing up and playing "army" with their friends. Lots of folks do this with paintball or airsoft battles, though they aren't usually reenacting a particular time or war. Kids (of all ages) also do this with laser-tag. Guys (and gals) also dress up as cowboys and relive the old west through cowboy action shooting. In other scenarios, they relive live combat or swat-type law enforcement scenarios with things like 3-gun competitions.
To answer the OP's question, the only WWII "reenactments" I've ever seen were either a computer game or a board game, or kids playing with toy soldiers; nothing full scale.
