How easy is it and how long does it take to become a pro?
Also, what do you enjoy most about knitting?
Thanks,
Carrot Juice
Yea another knitter. Making a scarf is probably the easiest thing you can try. Get a med weight yarn and some needles size 13 or so. You can cast on about 12-18 stiches depending on the weight of the yarn then just knit. It will make a stich called the garter stitch when you knit both sides instead of pearling. It leaves a little ridge. I love this. It is totally mindless. I can sit and knit up a scarf in a day with this pattern.
Go to knittinghelp.com, they have free online videos that will show you how to cast on, do the basic knit stitch,(garter) and how to bind off. There is also a huge forum there if you need to ask for help. Start off with a big needle size as movingtohouston suggested, I started with size 15. Metal needles are slippery, if you can find bamboo or plastic they are easier to knit with. And use a bulky weight yarn as opposed to thin, it's easier to handle.
I love the bamboo needles and would recommend you get a yarn tat is a bit fuzzy, hides uneven stitches better than smooth yarn. Scarves are great for beginners :-)
Anyone know how those plastic knitting looms are?, you can make hats etc using them, they look pretty simple and might be fast (now that the winter's finallly coming to an end, LOL).
Knitting is great! All my grandchildren have scarfs and they think they are great!
Once you get the hang of it, you will want to add different patterns to make scarfs and other things. That's when it becomes interesting and even more enjoyable.
Hope you find the enjoyment in knitting that I have found!
