Painting rocks and then hiding them is becoming very popular in my area. The idea is that someone will find the rock and perhaps it will brighten their day. The finder can keep the rock, or re-hide it. Most rock painting groups have a Facebook page where people can post the rocks they find and tell where they found them.
It was a really big fad here in Southern Maryland about a year ago. They even have a facebook site called "Charles County Rocks". People were leaving them on park benches, store window ledges, libraries. Now the practice seems to have died down some, at least I no longer hear about it.
This is a huge fad in and around Montrose Colorado.
