My 98-year-old father wants to dispose of his model railroad sets, and has tasked me with finding out if anything is worth any money.
If there is anyone here with an interest and knowledge in the subject, I will post some of his items.
thanks.
I would recommend you search for a model railroad club in your area. Bet there is one.
I had an American Flyer set in the 50's as a kid. Kept in all sealed in boxes after I grew up. Exwife threw it away in 97 said it was "Stupid". Wonder what it would be worth today?
I have an American Flyer, in the original box with all cars and original track. I had it appraised a couple of years ago along with a complete Lionel Santa Fe with track, extra cars, 2 transformers, and trestle. The Flyer was an extreme disappointment- $125.00. While I didn't think it would be thousands I didn't expect it to be so cheap. The reason given was they made hundreds of thousands of them. Mine was made in 1948. You can still get parts for them too. I have an extra engine that I bought from Ebay that doesn't run. The parts to fix it will be here next week. The Lionel was also a huge disappointment with engine and all cars in original boxes and even in the complete set box. The only thing I scored on is an old Arcade rare #106 Chevrolet car with no trunk. That was appraised at $5,000.00. I've since been offered more than that. If it wasn't given to me by the original child that played with it, now very old, I would have sold it.
There's a lot of "Buy, sell, trade railroad model" groups on Facebook. But they'll want to see photos with the OP. Don't tease them like you did us, LOL
Also eBay, which is actually where I get most of my stuff from
Ebay is a good way to check on prices but be sure to check on the sold listings because some sellers think their stuff is like gold and it never sells. I have seen G scale cars in the $30 range and in another listing the exact same car is $130. Guess which one I'm bidding on.
Trains are like anything else in that the prices are driven by demand and except for the really rare pieces there is not to much demand for trains.
It was good advice given above to seek out a local club to sell the trains. There is also a site called Trainz that buys large collections and sells them online auction style.
I have my grandfathers Lionel set that he played with as a kid, I wouldn't sell it but I did look it up and was a bit disappointed that it wasn't worth much considering it is 80+ years old. I also have a large collection of HO trains that I had as a kid and it is barely worth the hassle of selling them.
Let us know how you make out OP.
