I've been getting into it recently.

But, the problem is how do you really know others research are correct...I have one line that is British going back to the Pilgrims of New England, then back to William the Conqueror.

Really hard to find if that link is really correct or not.

I consider research from others to be clues or guides to my own research. You do not know the quality of their work usually well enough to trust it. Use their information to conduct your own research and obtain original documents or at least multiple sources of documents you cannot obtain.

I would request information from the poster of the Pilgrim/William line showing the source of their information. What they provide you with should show their quality of genealogy work and give you clues to the validity of it if you are not able to research it yourself.

There is lots of information online relating to the Pilgrim families and their descendants outside of sites like Ancestry. You could try looking at those to verify what you learned.
