Hand gun question
I've noticed there are gun shows held in different states.
Can you just go to one of these shows to purchase a hand gun to just have for self defense?

i dont think i would go to a gun show to purchase a weapon anymore than i would go to a traveling gypsy car dealer to get a car.

Every state is different. I'm pretty sure that I could, as I have my CCW and I've already submitted to an extensive background check and fingerprinting. I don't believe that an "average Joe" can do it, though, due to federal laws.
BTW, there's nothing wrong with buying a gun at a gun show. Huckleberry has apparently never been to one.

I think the largest one in the nation is in Oklahoma somewhere. I have a friend that goes every year and comes back with something different every time. I think last year he came back with a bolt action shotgun of all things. He seems to enjoy himself quite a bit at it.

Purchasing at a show is no different than purchasing in a shop, most dealers at shows own shops anyway.Gunshows are just like computer shows, boat shows whatever,a place ehere dealers converge in a convention atmosphere where people can shop from dealer to dealer by walking around.Different states may have different rules but usually they call you in for a background check, have you fill out the paper work which you need a drivers license, and some areas you need to wait 3 to 5 days to take it unless you have a permit. But federal and state laws apply at a show just like anywhere else.
Private sales are different.

Yes, what will happen is that they will transfer the gun to a local gun shop in your area. They will not allow you to take the gun that day (in most states).

Autumn - Arizona does not have very strict gun laws, and you can just go to the Crossroads Of The West Gun shows that are often held at the State Fair Grounds in Phoenix, on 19th Ave & McDowell.
All of the licensed dealers run the instantaneous background checks on anybody who wants to purchase a firearm of any type, so assuming you don't have any misdemeanors or felonies on your record, you should be able to pay for the weapon and walk out with it.
The same also applies if you go to any dealers in Arizona, like Bass Pro Shops, or Cabela's.
If you want to get a CCW permit (Concealed Carry) then that's a different story, in Arizona, like many other states, you'll have to go through training by a certified instructor in the handling of firearms to get the permit.

Magnum Mike,
Thanks for your reply.
What is a CCW permit?
Is that needed in Arizona?

A CCW is a permit that will allow you to carry a loaded weapon on you, in a concealed manner, like in your purse or hidden in a holster under your jacket. It is not required in Arizona, but you can conceal the weapon on your own property without the CCW, if you leave the bounderies of your properties, then you will be required to make the weapon visible if you do not have a CCW.
Without a CCW, you are allowed to carry a loaded weapon on you, in public establishments, wherever it is permitted, as long as you show it. You are also allowed to carry the weapon with you while driving, also as long as it is visible. If it is loaded, and you hide it under the seat, and you get pulled over for any reason, the police officer may give you a citation, or even arrest you for concealing the weapon. I know Phoenix and Scottsdale police officers understand that law-abiding gun owners like us don't cause any problems, and they wouldn't hassle us for leaving the weapon under the seat. But in some of the smaller municipalities around the valley, depending on the officer's discretion, you may end up with a citation for driving with a concealed weapon.
That's why if you want to drive with a weapon on you, it's always a good idea to make sure it is placed on the seat on the passenger side, just to be safe.
