I 've been a full-time music teacher for 40 years now, and the age range of the students I have at present is 4 to 69..so, age is not a huge consideration.
I have several parent and child lessons in the same hour or half hour, at no extra charge - I suggest if you ask your childs music teacher this could be arranged, and you would both enjoy it.
I taught my s.o. at 25 and he had no problem. Oh..it was embarrassing at first..I wont lie about that. Lots of "d-its" etc.
But you should do it. You will notice your focus and thinking might start to pick up once you learn advanced music. One thing you could do right now is teach yourself how to read music. You cant mess that up.
Bad habits I notice in players is wrong positioning/posture and bad timing or lacking consistency with the timing. When you go advanced there is technique to working the keys and keys/pedal type playing. I think that type of stuff is always easier when someone shows you in person.
Thanks to both of you! What are some bad habits that self taught piano players do? I would love to teach myself the basics, if I get more into it, then maybe take lessons. Paying for lessons for both my son and myself is just really expensive! What do you think? I really would like to be able to read music and play it, but not try to go out and get gigs or join a band!
people say that, but im not sure it's quite true. People say that about everything. "if you learn this X in Y subject, you will never get over doing XY"
It's bull if you ask me.
On a topic related note, good for your son. I wish i had learned the Piano or guitar as a kid, i love piano so much, it's so soothing.

As a serious amateur pianist, I would not say "You'll never get over a bad habit", but it's simply harder to get into the good habit if you don't leanr it in the first place.
That said, unless you're planning to become a serious piano student, a bad habit or two will not matter much. (And once you go down that road you need an acoustic piano) It's probably OK for an adult to start with some self-teaching, but get a teacher if you want to do more than beginner work.
Have fun!
P.S. To the person whose dad plays Chopin etudes at 79 after one year of piano, I salute him (Would he be called a "Senior prodigy"? ). It took me a dozen years of study before I could even think of playing Chopin etudes.
I have always wanted to play the piano but never took the initiative. I was thinking at 61 why start now, but after reading these posts, I'm thinking why not? I might do it! I can read music, I tried the guitar for awhile, took lessons. I know the keyboard sort of!
