By the way, what is your opinion of the Ruger 10/22 rimfire rifle? I am looking for a good gopher plinker around my property. It seems like a sweet little rifle.
Any other favorites come to mind?

Hard to go wrong with a 10/22. They are as popular as they are for a reason . My son has one, but I still rely on my 1941 vintage Mossberg 46M. I also kinda like the Marlin 60. I have a Walther P22 that's a doozy of a feral cat killer. It has a laser on it( the only gun I have a laser on) that makes zapping pests after dark around the barn and such kinda...fun.

If you are only going to own just one .22 rifle, the 10/22 is one that I would recommend. It is probably one of the most popular semi-auto .22LR rifles ever made, so there are a ton of upgrade or repair parts you can find for it. You really can't go wrong with it. A runner up in the semi-auto category is the Mossberg Plinkster 702. It's a decent shooter at a reasonable price, but there are no aftermarket upgrades that I'm aware of. The Marlin Model 60 is also a good gun in the category, from what I've heard, but I don't have one, so I can't comment on it. It's claimed to be the most popular .22 in the world.
Another .22LR rifle that I'd recommend is the Henry lever action, because it's accurate and (IMHO) fun to shoot. It's not a semi-auto, though, so it takes a little more effort to shoot it quickly, if you have a need to do so. There isn't much in the way of an aftermarket for it, so you pretty much have to leave it the way it was delivered.

Thanks for all the great information. I will check out your. recommendations.
I like the semi-auto aspect of the Ruger but not all that adverse to to nice lever action rifle.
It would be kinda fun to place a laser on the Ruger.

I have a couple of 10-22's and really like the Williams peep sight for them. Try it you'll like it. To beat it soundly IMHO you will spend as much on a scope as you spent on the rifle.
Not that there is anything wrong with that...
Take a look at the Henry lever .22, it seems to be a quite well-made little rifle. The price ain't bad either.

You don't really need to spend alot on a scope for a 22. I own several 22's and I get a good 4 powers big game scope for less than $50.00 and get 1 inch rings for the scope and put it on. You get a bigger scope of view and it will take more impact(drops, bumps, ect) than a regular 22 scope.

As a gunsmith I of course only see the damaged ones, but the Ruger 10/22 has a bit of a reputation for micro-fractures of the receiver where the bolt hammers it. There are a lot of aftermarket parts, and it's possible to build a complete 10/22 clone with nary a single Ruger part in it.
Also check out the Marlin Mdl 39 lever 22. It's built to last forever, forged receiver and all, and mine is very accurate with a 4X scope on it. I also have a Williams peep sight that I can quickly attach.
The Marlin semi-auto 22s are also very reliable and equally well made. Lots of options.

I have no problem with ammo, I still have a lot from the last time we were told that the gov. was taking all the guns away in the 90s, and it never happened. I have come to the conclusion sitting around worring about when the gov. gun grab is comming is a wast of life. It is a wedge issue used against those who can not see that it is a non issue. First off if they do ever come for the guns, it will not be barny fife, it will be the military and what the hell do you think a few podunks with ar15s are going to do if that happens? So why waste the time getting your panties in a bunch over something that most likely will not happen, and if it does you are not going to do much about by force. It is like the seced from the union crowd, not going to happen and if any state attempted it they would be put down and hard, so why waste your life wondering when the sky is falling and find out you forgot to live? BTW the ruger 10/22 is IMO the best 22 on the market, it is almsot indestructable. I have 2 one is the SS international.

Wow, just missed a whole 2 boxes of 45 ammo. Went to Walmart at 11 a.m. and the person in the sporting goods section said they got in 2 boxes of 45 ammo this week but sold them both at 9:30 a.m. I was too late! I guess the only way to buy ammo at Walmart is to camp out 24/7 and wait! My husband is already rationing his shooting since we're still trying to get primers. It's great having all the other essentials to making ammo, but definitely need those primers.
