Interestingly enough, airsoft guns are only required to be SOLD with an orange tip. After you buy it you're free to remove it. In fact many of the higher-end airsoft guns have screw-off orange tips to make this easy to do.

HarryChickpea you must have read my mind! I went out last night at 2am to see if I could find the cat (I didn't) but it occurred to me that if I get the airsoft gun so I can shoot 100feet but then find the cat only 20 feet away...will the pellet do more damage if I am closer? If yes...then thats a problem since I don't want to kill him and can't expect him to run in a straight line for another 30 feet before I take a shot
The slingshot won't work for me because if I do see the cat, I'll most likely be running towards him and between that, the distance and my less than perfect vision I seriously doubt I'll come close to hitting him..but would be very likely to hit a neighbors car with a hickory nut!
I thought of a water gun but thats not going to shoot very far ( I think) plus it'll be hard to hide a big rifle from the neighbors when I take my nightly walks to find the cat.
Whatever gun I get I was really counting on duct taping a laser pointer on top so I could improve my chances of hitting the cat so thats another reason the slingshot wouldn't work.
Sorry this is taking so long to resolve but how about rubber bullets? I thought thats what police use during riots? what kind of gun uses that? or can I do something to the airsoft pellets to make them less likely to injure? are they less lethal if they are smaller?
If there is there a gun that you load by dropping the "bullet" down the muzzle (like old cannons)... that would be perfect! then I could try shooting different things as bullets and see how far they get.

You need to go in a different direction now before you get hurt. Let me take this one issue at a time:
1. Yes, the closer your are the more damage you will do. It's basic physics.
2. You're planning on running at the cat and shooting it at the same time? You will never hit it with an airsoft gun or any other gun. Not a chance. (yes it's possible to hit it, I could probably pull it off with a long gun in a couple of shots, but basing your skill level on the questions you ask, you will not hit it)
3. Laser pointers don't really help that much unless you've trained a lot with them. Especially not one that's just duct taped on top of something, you'll need to take the time to sight it in properly, and even then it's much faster to use the sights than search around for a little red dot somewhere.
4. Rubber bullets are fired out of a regular firearm. Good luck obtaining some, and presuming you're in city limits it would be just as illegal to shoot rubber bullets as real bullets. You'd most likely kill the cat, also.
5. Guns that load from the muzzle are called muzzleloaders. These are real guns. Don't put random objects down the barrel to shoot. You just might blow it up. Also, it won't be anywhere close to quiet.
Give up on the idea of shooting it with some contraption. You're either going to kill yourself in the process, or waste a lot of time accomplishing nothing.

Thanks Jknight8907 for the great answers..even if it did dash my hopes of shooting the cat in the ass with a non-lethal bullet!
I feel like I'm up the proverbial creek without a paddle. Can't trap it..can't shoot it..what's left??
OK, one more shot at this (sorry for the pun )Is there a gun that will spray a lot of pellets at once? I don't mean a machine gun..I need something that could cover a few sqft in a spray at the same time. Then maybe I'll have a good chance of actually hitting him from far away. Is that a possibility?

Actually you could get a full-auto airsoft gun (an airsoft machine gun), and I think they even make airsoft shotguns which would be what your looking for as far as a lot of pellets in one shot.

You may not be the only one the cat is bothering. If you tell someone in the neighborhood what you're doing, you may get a donation on the cost of ammo! lol

Maybe the solution is to arm your cats?
As I mentioned at the outset, you aren't going to get a whole lot of success with your approach anyway. Since this is happening in a neighborhood at 2 AM, you also have some limitations. Lobbing a firecracker into the general area is likely out of the question. If your cats are outside as well, there are going to be fights between toms.
That leaves you with a limited arsenal of motion activated sprinklers and/or water balloons (perhaps with a tiny amount of ammonia mixed in to make the cats think they are being peed on).
jknight is right on all counts in that 23rd post to the thread. About the only time to go running after an animal is if you are playing, or being chased by a black racer snake. Most animals are faster and more agile than humans. Cats equate an angry human getting them wet with being spit at, which they hate and fear. If you can stand in one spot, aim, get them wet and at the same time hiss at them, you start to speak their language. However, it may NOT keep a tom from coming back the next night.

I swear I have thought about arming my cat! I wanted to make a collar with spikes so that it would pierce his paw if he swatted her! Its a she so she is very small compared to the bully (there's no such thing as not hitting females in the cat world).
My dream would be to catch him in a trap..scare the heck out of him with water and noise and then make my female cat stand on top of his cage so he thinks she is dominant over him. I don't know if the last part would work but it sounds like something the Dog Whisperer would do in my situation
I thought from what jknight wrote in his last post that I had the solution..a gun that sprays a bunch of bullets at once. That way I'll hit him with at least one pellet and if I happen to see him when I'm too close to shoot, I'll just shoot at the ground or a tree close by instead of right at him so as to scare him.
Only problem is that I can't find the airsoft gun that sprays a load of bullets at once I googled airsoft and spray, airsoft and machine gun, airsoft and many bullets...I dont know what else to try?? If anyone knows a name or model, I'd be mighty appreciative!

I don't want this thread to get off on a tangent of which is better for cats. But I will just explain that I am living in this house on 1/4 acre, at the end of a cul-de-sac, in large part to make my cats happy. Its certainly not because I love raking the millions of leaves! I won't even go into the money and the hours I put into making their food... Not too many people would make so many accommodations for their cats so I hope it shows that I love them like crazy.
I also believe in providing quality of life as well as quantity. I know they love climbing trees and chasing birds and lizards and mice. On a few occasions they have dropped live lizards into my purse as an extra special surprise at the bank so you can see the love is mutual!
I am spending hours researching traps and guns and safe ammo because I care about animals. Not only my cat but also the fleabag that is bullying her. I just want him to stay out of my yard.
