Default Question about paint-by-number and copyright law...

If anyone happens to know the answer...

Are the images on a paint-by-number copyrighted?
I recently saw an obvious paint-by-number entered in a county fair, and it brought that thought to mind about whether or not the person could (legally, technically) submit that painting as their own work, or if the finished image was, in fact, copyrighted to the company that produced the kit or whatever. (And the fact that it was submitted into categories with original work kinda bothered me, too. Maybe because I was one of the artists that submitted an original? )

it seems you're right... anything 1963 & before, if not renewed, is free of copyright, though. copyright laws are very protective these days. a faithful & talented rendering of a paint by number kit should only qualify in a contest of it's peers hehehe. sorry you had to endure such a quirky unfair experience!

Nothing wrong with a paint by numbers painting being entered. They should award the painter a copy of the winning ribbon.
