if not, which ones would you recommend instead?

Really, you have to try them out to appreciate them. Ziess are also excellent, but cost. Nikon are excellent.
Really depends on what you want to use the glass for. For serious hunting the Stiener are probably worth the $.
Good binoculars are something you only have to buy once. If you are careful with them, they will last lifetimes and always work as well as the day you bought them.

I have no personal experience with the Steiner brand, but I've head nothing but good about them. I have a pair of Pentax DCF WP 8x42 and they are great! Comparable to the high end Nikon and Zeiss glass.

Are the worth it...YES.
Is it a bargain...not really.
That price is kind of normal for Steiner 8X30 binoculars.
I used to wonder about expensive optics also. Understand though, good optics become worth their weight in Gold when looking through them for extended periods of time.
This is where the Steiner's, (and other high end optics) shine. Bright . clear, no eye strain, water proof, rugged, just wonderful products. Unfortunately, this all comes at a high dollar cost.
For me personally, I liked them so much, I bought a second pair to have with me when I travel.

If you want binoculars that you buy just once in your lifetime there is only one brand worth considering.........Nikon.
If you want ordinary casual binoculars then any brand will do.

I have a pair of Focal 7x50s (K-Mart) that I've had since the mid-1970s and use heavily mainly for astronomy, including trips to New Mexico on a motorcycle, and they're still working fine. Must be those "Siam Cat Optics".

Steiner are used by the military . 8X30 are very popular for field hunting glass also.About as powerful for easy hand holding and a good field of view. That is about standard price.
