anything other than "winnipeg jets" would be a travesty. i'm sure the fans up in winnipeg largely agree, and will go nuts if the team is given a different moniker. after all, it isn't just about bringing back nhl hockey - it's also about reviving their beloved winnipeg jets, complete with the name and hopefully the team's history in a cleveland browns-type deal, although i'm not sure if the latter is possible.

personally, i'd hate for the team to be named "manitoba moose", as that just sounds minor league to me. really, any name with "manitoba" as the geographic identifier doesn't sound as good as "winnipeg" and smacks of a desperate attempt to try to pander to non-winnipeg residents of the entire province - as if naming the team for the city of winnipeg would somehow alienate potential fans outside of the greater winnipeg area.

hopefully common sense prevails and the classic "winnipeg jets" name is restored.

btw, here's an updated article on the situation:
Source: Sale of Atlanta Thrashers to True North completed - ESPN

Quote:
True North Sports and Entertainment has completed its deal to purchase the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers, clearing the way to move them to Winnipeg, a source tells ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.

True North has scheduled a news conference for noon ET on Tuesday at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, at which a "significant community announcement" will be made.

It remains to be seen whether the franchise will bring the Jets team name back into the league with Winnipeg's return. A source told LeBrun the name of the Winnipeg team is "still not determined."

it's now official.
true north has just announced its purchase of the thrashers and planned relocation of the franchise to winnipeg:

The Associated Press: Thrashers moving to Winnipeg next season

Quote:
The Atlanta Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg.

True North Sports and Entertainment announced Tuesday at Winnipeg's MTS Centre that it has purchased the struggling team and will shift it to Canada next season. The deal is reportedly worth $170 million, including a $60 million relocation fee that would be split by the rest of the league.

"I'm excited beyond words to announce the purchase of the Atlanta Thrashers," Mark Chipman, chairman of the board of True North, said during a news conference.

The deal was completed early Tuesday.

"It's nice to be back in Winnipeg after all these years," said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who attended the news conference.

They actually wont have a name for a while. Not only that, they also have to come up with a logo and jersey designs. The deal had just went through early this morning.

They SHOULD be called the JETS again.
also, it is spelled WINNIPEG, and I too am concerned about the small market. Manitoba is a province the size of TEXAS with a population of just over 1 million, while Texas is over 20 million.
and regarding the finals, . . .
GO CANUCKS ! ! !
p.s.
I am appalled by the fact that there are 2 San Jose Sharks threads (which should be merged) that are being artificially 'bumped' up !!
You LOST, . . . it is over. Just rejoice that you were beaten by the best.
I dont know what these San-Hosers are trying to pull .
