I don't know how it is everywhere else, but among Philly fans, there are not a whole LOT of hockey fans, but those people who are into the Flyers are loyal almost to a point of being religious. Most sports fans are primarily into the Eagles and Phillies. But there is a smaller group of hockey fans who are INTENSE about their team.

Eagles and Phils fans are notorious for booing their own players, but Flyers fans are different. They never get down on their own team. Football and baseball fans like to THINK they are loyal, but the fact is that once their team loses, fans will turn against the players rather quickly. But hockey fans really stick by their team.

That's what I have noticed from Philly fans. I was wondering if it is similar in other places. I'm not a huge hockey fan myself. i'm much more into football. But i have friends who live for playoff hockey.

You could make a case for hockey being a cult sport in the United States. I grew up in a small town in Michigan. All the Detroit teams were popular. The Red Wings had an advantage of being the best team in town but the Tigers and Wolverine football were easily the most popular teams. That said the Wings fans, like I was, were crazy about the team.

I was just a kid but had I passed Patrick Roy or Claude Lemieux in a dark alley...
