What a moron Mike Ilitch and the new arena will bring jobs and people to Detroit the Redwings are one of the NHL elite teams. Under Mike Ilitch the redwings have won 4 Stanley cups one time back to back. How many current NHL owners can say that. He is paying his fair share of the cost. The wing always sellout home games, Detroit is hockey town.

To be clear on the financing, the city is only contributing the lots at a discount for $1. The state of Michigan is picking up the tab on the public financing, not the city.

Ilitches to get all revenues from new publicly financed Red Wings arena

We can go back and forth on the financing mechanisms for the arena. Even the Free Press leads with a sensationalist headline on the issue, so I don't expect to have a rational conversation about it. The bottom line is this.........Detroit could not lose the Red Wings. Competition among cities is what drives these taxpayer funded arenas. The city itself makes out pretty well in this deal. The state, maybe not so much.
