The Gopher women are amazing. They haven't lost a game in like 2 years. My friend's daughter is on that team, a special group of young women looking to win another national championship!

Now entering the Frozen Four, the Gopher women could be considered as the greatest team in NCAA history.....if they can win these next two.

records set this year...

39-0-0 record this year
47 consecutive games won, dating back to Feb 2012 (previous record 21 by Harvard)
47 consecutive games won or tied (previous record 32 by Wisconsin)
24 consecutive road wins (previous record 15 by Marcyhurst)
39 wins in '12 - '13 (previous record 37 by Wisconsin)
0 losses in '12 - '13 (previous record 1 by Wisconsin)

What may be even more impressive, is the Gophers have out-scored their opponents 207 (5.3) to 31 (.8) this year.

In addition, the three finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award (womens' version of the Hoby Baker) are all Gopher women: senior defenseman Megan Bozek, junior forward Amanda Kessel and senior goaltender Noora Raty (pronounced Rah-too).
  • Bozek is a senior defenseman from Buffalo Grove, Ill. She currently ranks second among all defenseman in the nation with 52 points (18g-34a) and 15th among all positions. The team captain recently became the school record holder in career points, career goals and career assists by a defenseman.
  • Kessel, who is a junior forward from Madison, Wis., leads the nation in all major offensive categories, including points (94), goals (43), assists (51) and short-handed goals (5). This season, Kessel became the 24th player in NCAA history to reach 200-career points and only the ninth player to do so in three seasons. She is six points away from becoming only the fourth player in NCAA history to reach 100 points in a single season.
  • Räty, who is a three-time Patty Kaz nominee, is a goaltender from Espoo, Finland. The senior currently holds NCAA records for career wins (109), career shutouts (41) and single season shutouts (15). Räty, who is 33-0-0 this season, is currently first in the nation in save percentage (.956) and second in goals against average (0.93).

I liked that tradition. Plus don't forget UMD only had three (?) non natives en route to their world championship two years ago. All three of Herb's teams were all natives as well.

The Wooger only wanted MN kids which I thought was a bit of a mistake. Ringers from other places wanted to play at the U but he wouldnt give them a full ride. See what letting some outside talent in can do...!!! Still plenty on MN kids on the team and now were getting some hardware.

The women play in the Championship on Sunday.

The men got eliminated from the final five but are all but guaranteed a slot in the NCAAs next week.

I still respect Woog for that. We're basically the only state in the Union that can do that - maybe Michigan too.

I was going there during the Woog era and it bothered me. Knew there were a couple ringers that wanted to play with us but didnt get an offer. One ended at UW and they won a title I believe.

Well we would probably become the Yankees of college hockey if we took the blue chippers from all over.

It did tick me off that Woog never won at least one national championship.

I honestly thought it was college policy, or at least keeping on with Herb's tradition of using teams of strictly natives. Oh well.
