the referee lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle, no goal. It was obvious.

He never blew the freakin whistle. It was no where near his mouth as the puck went in. HNIC showed it veryclearly in slow motion.

I don't get it. The referee lost sight of the puck. As did I. When he loses sight of the puck, he blows it dead. It is even written in the rulebook about the refs intent to blow the whistle, not when the whistle is blown. What happens after that is meaningless.I am not a fan of either team. I am neutral. I just want to see good hockey and it was a good game. Just a bunch of sour grapes by Hawks fans.

From the NHL rule book:

31.2 Disputes - As there is a human factor involved in blowing the whistle to stop play, the Referee may deem the play to be stopped slightly prior to the whistle actually being blown. The fact that the puck may come loose or cross the goal line prior to the sound of the whistle has no bearing if the Referee has ruled that the play had been stopped prior to this happening.

The play was technically dead at the moment the referee decided to make that call, even though the whistle wasn't yet blown.

I don't know if there's any consensus on how long "slightly prior to the whistle actually being blown" is, though.

I would guess that he'd lost the puck and was searching for it when it crossed the line. Not knowing what had happened, he had to claim he made the decision to stop play the moment he lost sight of the puck, rather than sitting and waiting to see what would happen.
