i am asking,as i don't know -or found googling this question,
what is the purpose of the IIHF tourny? what is gained from it?

please advise, as i am curious-thanks

It is a particularly bad tournament due to the timing. It occurs right in the midst of the NHL playoffs. So the only NHL players who are able to play for any country are those from teams that have already been eliminated from the NHL playoffs. So you end up with a bunch of European league players and those from bad NHL teams.

The IIHF World Juniors, which takes place around the Christmas holidays, is a much better tournament.

Worst IIHF tournament I have ever seen was at the World University Games. Third and fourth rate talent
as even major colleges do not want to give up players in the middle of a season. The gold medal game
between Canada and Kazakhstan was an absolute disgrace.
