I'm a new hockey fan and unfortunately I'm at the mercy of the NHL Network and NBC to decide which games I get to watch. I like the Avs (watched them a bit when I was a kid) so I'm lucky if they have more than a couple games I get to watch on TV. There's no NHL teams in the Seattle area so hockey is never shown on the regional networks.
What's the best way to watch Avs games? From what I understand there are two services available. NHL Gamecenter/Center Ice is available for a ludicrous price, and Hockey Streams is a bit cheaper. However, Hockey Streams isn't a licensed NHL product so I'm not sure how reliable they will be.
Anyone else have this problem? Are there any other alternatives to the exhorbitantly priced NHL streaming service?
Ludicrous? Exorbitant?
I've been getting Center Ice every year it has been available. I consider it a bargain. I think I missed seeing 1 Rangers game last year. So that's less than $2.00 per game. I'll take that any day.
DirecTV is offering the first 2 weeks of NHL Center Ice coverage for free... not sure if other providers offer the same but if yours does then take advantage of that.... if not then... you're out of luck.

I bought the Center Ice package but all my team's home games were blacked out. Can you give me an idea if this happens to you? Maybe I bought the wrong package? I'm talking about the direct NHL Center Ice package off the NHL web site. I cancelled it because there is no point in only being able to watch road games.
Mini rant: I just don't understand why they don't offer pay-per-game/view. Bewildering, even. I can't understand the archaic notion of these dinosaur licensing agreements. I guess as long as the leagues get the money upfront from the broadcasters, the leagues don't have to care about the fans. /mini rant.

All of the cable & online packages black out local games. This is written in to the TV contracts of all of the major sports. Broadcast and cable networks pay BIG money to broadcast local teams. It can be in the billions. They don't want cable cutters watching the game on-line when they've paid this enormous premium to be the exclusive provider in a region. This is not going to change. Best advice is to pay for a private proxy service.
BTW, some of these contracts do suck. I can understand protecting your local rights, but in some sports it is beyond ridiculous. For example, MLB. Depending on where you live, six or seven teams might declare you a "home team". There are people in places like Hawaii or Iowa who can't watch half of the games on a given day because either the entire west coast or the mid-west is declared a home territory.
I've decided not to drop the money on the subscription service. 160 is just too much.
