How much difference is there between the various levels of college hockey?

By the levels I mean NCAA DII to DIII, to ACHA Div 1, 2, 3

There really are a lot of hockey teams in the Northeast, and midwest. All the lower levels seem concentrated only in the Midwest and Northeast.
