As for the Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin hype, it's similar to what the NBA does with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, and what the NFL does with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. In Crosby and Ovechkin, the NHL has found its two most talented young players and marketed them to promote interest in the league. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals just happen to be the beneficiaries.[/quote]

The NHL is loaded with star players they could use for marketing. Those two are talented, but even if they were the most talented (debateable - see other threads), their talent is not so much above the talent of other star players. If they want to build fans in other cities, showcase the talent that is there. The NHL is not the NBA even if Gary wants it to be.

The "Original Six' designation is WELL RESPECTED and cherished in the hockey world.
Example, . . .
I lived in Edmonton back when they were winning cups with Gretzky, and were the strongest team in the history of sports (can be argued on another thread), . . . AND
There were Edmontonians who were Boston Bruins fans, due to the history and tradition of an original 6 team. Other locals said they would have preferred to see Boston beat the Oilers for the Cup because, . . . they were an original 6 team.
you will find that in a lot of the newer markets, many locals still cling to their favorite original 6 team.
