Is it me, or does the NHL have some sort of a weird Original Six obsession? It seems to me that these teams get a lot of attention and coverage and everyone goes on about how it would be great if this Original Six team or that one was competing for the Cup. I've seen merchandise commemorating these teams and all kinds of other things that place emphasis on them. This is strange because I don't know of any of the other sports leagues that treat their founding members in such a manner.

Thoughts?

With an exception or two, the Original 6 tend to have more fans than other teams do. Also, in the NHL tradition and history still matter. I think most fans like it that way. I know I do, but that may be because I grew up i n an Original 6 city.

Think of the markets in which the original 6 is housed:

Boston
Detroit
Toronto
New York City
Chicago
Montreal

Think of some of the markets that are not in the original 6:

Raliegh, NC
Miami
Phoenix
Nashville

I don't know, it seems pretty obvious to me why the original 6 cities tend to get more attention.

Okay, but what about Los Angeles, Denver, Dallas, Minnesota, Vancouver, Washington, D.C., etc.? I think it's a bit unfair the way these Original Six teams are regarded in some ways.

Since all the Hockey news seems to be about Crosby and Ovechkin, neither of which play for an Original 6 team, I think it's actually reversed now. Priginal 6 teams aren't getting the same attention that they used to.

The first NHL season had Toronto, Ottawa and two Montreal clubs. The other "original six" teams are just tooting their own horns.

From Wikipedia at Pittsburgh Pirates (NHL) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

The Pittsburgh Pirates were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL), based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 192526 to 192930. The nickname comes from the baseball team also based in the city. For the 193031 season the team moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and played one season as the Philadelphia Quakers.

Among the "Original Six," only the Red Wings, Canadiens and Rangers have won the Stanley Cup in the last 20 years, and only the Red Wings have won it more than once. I don't really detect much bias in any of those teams' favor these days, except maybe a little bit for the Red Wings. Be that as it may, I dig it whenever any of those teams are in the playoffs because they all have established, passionate fan bases.

As for the Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin hype, it's similar to what the NBA does with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, and what the NFL does with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. In Crosby and Ovechkin, the NHL has found its two most talented young players and marketed them to promote interest in the league. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals just happen to be the beneficiaries.
