I'm a real wood person who have always loved stained wood, and hated painted wood. I'm currently pregnant and on a tight budget.

The baseboards, door trim, and window trim were all stained less than a year ago. I'm trying to get the nursery ready, and had chosen a bedding set with wallborder. And painted the walls khaki and royal blue and had planned to put up border where the 2 colors meet. After painting the nursery I've changed bedding sets and this one does not have border. So I found a really good deal on chair railing, but the downfall is it has to be painted. My question is will this look right? The stained trim is a dark color and the chair rail is gonna be semi gloss true white.

All opinions are welcomed.

Does the chair rail HAVE to be white?

I'd paint it the same color as what you have on the bottom of the wall.

That way it won't stand out as not matching the stained wood because it will blend into SOMETHING in the room.

I'd just like to say that I'm glad you're not going with a wallpaper border. I think they are soooooo 1980s and they make future decorating a hassle.

No the chair railing doesn't have to be white. It could be blue. I never thought of doing it with the darker color.

You could also do something fun like a bright glossy red. That would look cool with the khaki and royal blue. A glossy royal blue would also look cool.

A chocolate brown might work, too, if you've got brown furniture or brown in the bedding.

Here is another option. Have the paint store match the same color or hue as your stained trim, then provide it as a paint. There will be no woodgrain showing on the chair rail, but it will blend visually because it will be the same color as the trim. There are also solid, i.e. not transparent stains, possibly from the same paint manufacturer that was used for your trim. This may work instead of paint. Good luck.

I'd look at pine trim, not the white partical board stuff. It can be stained and might be the best option. Otherwise you probably could get away with painting it a blue color, or just give up on it all together, and paint all the walls one color

I would pick out a 3rd color from the bedding and do the chair rail in that color.

I think it would be a huge mistake to paint the chair raile a third color. That will would draw attention to the chair rail.

The GOAL is to draw attention away from the fact the chair rail doesn't match the rest of the trim, best achieved by painting it one of the wall colors so it blends in.

It's a nursery, they are supposed to be fun rooms. It would be adorable. I certainly would not do it in a formal room but in a nursery it would be very cute.
