Pick up a copy of the leading design magazines and you will see all sorts of styles presented well.
I think good execution matters infinitely more than whether one goes with, say, Danish modern versus Louis Quinze. I don't think you can go wrong if you pick a style you like and do it very well. The trick, of course, is doing it well.
im with market square on this one...
who cares if its "in" if YOU like it then do it...
decorating based on whats in is just gonna leave you feeling incomplete and needing to redecorate as fads change...
decorating based on a look you love however will last a lifetime and be much more satisfying.
your the oe that has to live there so if you want the shabby chick look, then go for it!
Well, just jumping in here, but I tend to like the "salvation Army" look myself!
I love shopping their thrift stores, you never know what you will find, lots of interesting things. Over the years I've collected items that match as I pick them. Imagine my reaction when I visited my cousin for the first time in years, she had almost the exact same things! I mean, we had the same drapes, same decorator pillows, same or very similar throw rugs, only difference---she paid top dollar, I got mine practically given away. Like the matching pair of Stieffel lamps, still had the price tag, $400, I got for $45 total---she had almost the exact same ones, she paid top dollar!
I also shop Goodwill, but find them high compared to SA. Also, you find more furniture at SA because they pick up more stuff than GW. The trick is to find a thrift store in a ritzy area, its amazing what "rich" people get tired of!
