I have a great wool rug with a heavy burlap-like backing that was stored in a hot attic too long. The upper surface is OK but when used on my wood floor the rug leaves a wax-like substance that has seemingly melted through the backing. What can I either place beneath the rug to protect the floor or attach to the underside?

You need a good rug pad. Never put a rug on a hardwood floor without a pad!

Something like this: Superior Hard Surface and Carpet Rug Pad (8' x 10') | Overstock.com

or this: Durable Hard Surface and Carpet Rug Pad (8' x 10') | Overstock.com
