#2 will work with the pine table, from what I can tell, not sure of the finish on your table.....
But, I must say, I lovelovelove a painted piece in a room, I always try to incorporate 1.

Oh either piece I choose will get painted. I'm leaning towards robins egg blue.

I'm not a designer, and you guys usually help me, but I like the first (the original) one better ... but I think the 2nd one goes better with that dining set (which I really like -- wish I had Parsons chairs so I could switch out slipcovers!).

I could see lots of uses for that first one, not only in a dining room!

Love the thought of the blue......is your table a pedestal, or does it have legs?
Just thinking #2 with a legged table might be too many legs for the room, you know?

The first one would be fab as LR piece to mount a TV over!
My mother has a beautiful MCM walnut piece that she is using in the LR under the TV.
It was part of her bedroom suite originally, but it really works in the LR, she has even used the piece as a buffet in the DR in another house.

Kshe, that's just what I was thinking! It's really a multi-use piece. Fallingwater, if you buy that one, would love to see the pics. I am hoping to be motivated to stain/paint lots of unfinished furniture I have -- once I move to the new house in a couple of weeks!

I vote for option #1 painted robin's egg blue with new hardware. Buffet #2 has limited storage and could only be used in a dining room as opposed to buffet #1 which could be used in other rooms as well if you decide to change it out in the future. The shelves with #1 would look good too.

What the heck does he have on top of the pine buffet a fence???

The lines of #1 are just much more interesting.....I get really tired of seeing nothing but right angles in a room, I always try to break the angles with curves when I am designing a room.
It just gets really boring, you know?

How difficult is it to prep a piece like this for painting, and am I committing some horrific sin by painting something from a decent hand-crafted manufacturer who is now out of business?

NOT difficult at all! You are fortunate that the piece is white, but even so, I prepped and painted a bright dark RED 1950's vanity that I found in a thrift store for my teen aged daughter, and it was a piece of cake!

I used a fine sand paper in a circular motion. I lightly sanded the piece in a small circular motion. I did this twice. In between, I want over it with a whisk broom, followed by a damp cloth.

After I painted. I used an antique Ivory gloss. I used spray paint, and it came out beautifully!

I changed the knobs from a brown wood (yuk) to a Lucite crystal.

Spray paint - it's not just for out door furniture any more!

As far as your idea is concerned - I LOVE IT! A Robin's Egg Blue would work well with your coastal decor! So would a soft Aqua.

I do hope you will post "After" photos!

Almost forgot. Buffet # one - all the way! More unique, obviously a better piece , and it has a classy mid - century luxury look.

I think there is NOTHING wrong with painting anything at all, if it's YOURS and you want to use it. Painted wood is not to me a criminal act, especially on a piece of furniture. When it comes to a home, with hard wood trim, chair rails, real panning, etc, I feel; differently. If you don't like this look, why buy a wood filled home?

But furniture that is of a good quality, has a right to be re-purposed for use today. Some older dark furniture just does not look right today, but the lines are lovely and timeless!

There are so many would be stylish pieces that are over looked and wind up in dumpsters because people don't want to paint them - and yet they don't want to use them. Which is worse?
