The reason is because your fireplace is very high, more so than other fireplaces, and that is just the style it is. Sorry, no to be offensive, but I can't imagine it being comfortable to watch from sitting or possibly laying on a couch.
Comfortability aside, my heart sank when I saw a flat screen hanging above that regal mantel. It's too elegant to have a flat screen above it.

Right, right, right. I absolutely agree

The fireplace is so elegant, and so beautiful, then you look up and see this modern flat screen just hanging there. No, sorry, it doesn't work. It sort of cheapened the look of the the room.

Maybe if the TV had a fancy frame to border it to match the fireplace that would look much better, and give it that custom look, as opposed going to best Buys to buy a flat screen and hang it up.

Sort of? Definitely!

If you must hang a flat screen above a formal fireplace, this would be a better way to do it:

I like this idea. I think and arched top wood door would look really nice there. But it looks like you'll need something with glass or an open area so your remote will work with your electronics for your tv.

I'm not a fan of bookshelves 'cause I feel they just look junky. I'm also not a fan of tvs above fireplaces--regardless of height. Your's looks neck wrenching but perhaps your room is large enough that the neck pain isn't an issue. If you put an armoire in that space, then you'll have that same issue of making sure there's an opening/glass area for your electronics.

I found these:

Armoire in tv niche

shelving beside tv (scoll down the page)

arched top armoire

Somone else with a similar question

tv above fireplace, where to put cable box

Good luck to you. Let us know what you decide.

We had a similar space in our last home - My husband built a bookcase and hammered and shimmed it into the space then added moldings, trim - that meant there was dead space behind the bookcase but we didn't care. Honestly, the bookcase looked like it was original to the house and bookcases next to a fireplace are a classic.

I did a house once with a concealed TV over a mantel, I designed it to have a painting over the TV, with concealed hinges that swung open to one side to the touch.
Unfortunately, the house burned before I could have it photographed.
That being said, I knew those entertainment niches were gonna be an issue when flat screens came in.
I like Cattknaps idea of bookshelves.

Ditto wanting to see the other side of the fireplace in terms of balance. I might consider putting a bar with wine glasses above and an enclosed (doors) wine rack below. Below the wine rack I would put the TV equipment. Again, it is difficult not knowing what the rest of the room looks like and that might very well change my idea. When I say bar, i am not meaning a wet bar just a small piece of granite for the top area and maybe a few shelves.

oh no, that is not fun..

but yes, a painting sounds nice also, hinges even better.
when the TV is off a blank screen hanging in mid air is so not attractive.

That is a good idea and one I haven't heard yet. The only thing is I'm kinda nerdy and love showing off a few select books. And family photos, too, of course. I couldn't do that with a closet. But I appreciate you thinking outside the box for me!
