OK Someone explain this to me please ... paint colors ...
I do understand that companies change and discontinue paint colors and paint lines from time to time, but why can't you simply take the paint chip to your local paint shop and have them match the color? What's the difference?
Also, are there specific colors that the local paint store can't match?
Or are there specific colors that the local paint store aren't allowed to match?

Yes, I've done that plenty of times, which is why I don't understand all these posts of "oh does anyone have something like Duron antique cream" or "sherwin williams fudge" or "martha stewart iceberg lettuce" or something like that ...
Can't you just get them matched at the paint store?

LOL, maybe they don't have Loews or Home Depots in their towns. I know the big companies have the capability to do it however, many of the small town mom & pop places do not. So it could me that many people who are asking, don't have access to the larger stores as one would in a big city

I know some people have favorite brands of paint. My dad, for example, loves Benjamin Moore and won't paint with anything else. So, like the post below asking for a Benjamin Moore color - perhaps they want to stick to Benjamin Moore paint.

And, now our Home Depot won't color match from one line of paint to another. for instance, you have a paint color from Glidden, but want to buy Behr paint at Home Depot, they will not color match. However, I THINK if you bring in a color swatch from a line they don't carry and want to color match, they will do that.
Lowes on the other hand, still color matches between paint lines. and I love their American Heritage line (I think they changed the name of it.)

Most large retail stores have not so smart and not so motivated people employed within. My wife(Ammons_Home) runs a Benjamin Moore store. She matches colors all day long. Colors from other companies, colors someone peeled off a wall or exterior of the house and even deck stains, cabinet stains and hardwood floor stains. Most small mom and pop stores will have someone there that knows their paint. If paint is all they do, they have to do it well to stay in biz........they don't have lawn mowers hardware and patio furniture to keep them afloat!

Exactly. This "we can't match that" sounds like just another way to get out of having to actually DO SOMETHING to earn their pay. There's an awful lot of that going around. I guess thinking is a rare but painful experience for certain portions of the population.

Sometimes you don't have the paint chip or a sample to bring to the store to match. Most local (not big box) mom and pop paint places can and will match colors as long as you have a sample. I've done this with my local paint store and they matched spot on but I had a sample. Now I need to repaint my attic drop door because it's chipping and I don't have a sample so I'm stuck (i'm hoping I can strip off a large enough paint sample for my paint store guy to match).
FYI that really, really expensive benjamin moore paint (they just came out with the line), paint store guys are not allowed to match the chip from those paints with a cheaper interior paint (I asked).
