Hopefully that comes through. It seems like a nice, inexpensive way to dress the space above the kitchen cabinets. All you need is that breadboard material and molding
I used a collection of inexpensive teapots, some with chips. A couple of times a year I'd take them down, put them in the dishwasher, then put them back above the cabinets.
That space is a great place to display a collection of objects. Above my cabinets I have a big collection of antique aqua glass bottles. Wire baskets, tea kettles, ceramic pitchers, wooden duck decoys or birds would look neat too. You don't have to display a ton of them thus avoiding a cluttered look.

That looks great but I don't think I have enough space above my cabinets to do something like that.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I think I'm going to try lights above the cabinets and keep my eye open for something collect to put up there. After years of moving frequently I don't have very many collections to speak of. I like the idea of lining the cabinets for easy cleaning.
do you have crown on the cabinets? if so, I can see leaving them bare, if not, put some crown up there.
my cabinets go to the ceiling with a build up and crown. I like it like that.
If I weren't going to the ceiling, I'd do a decent sized crown and lighting above it like a previous poster showed, I think thats a good look too. or skip the lighting, how often do you have it on anyway.
In the past I did a design for client where we incorporated framed pictures mounted with vertical rods above the cabinets. The frame size was selected based on symmetry of the cabinets below and the area was back lit. The homeowner was not an avid chef so cleaning involved dusting. The back lit frames with the vertical support cast a nice looking shadow in the evenings and I was told later by client, that they typically just left these on unless working in the kitchen.
I collect Roseville pottery. I never really liked the look of "stuff" above the kitchen cabinets until I had nowhere else to put all my Roseville and so put some of it above my cabinets. I use a swiffer to clean up there every month or so and do an in-depth cleaning once a year. I'd clean the tops of my cabinets that often anyway, even if there were nothing up there.
Texasfirewheel I complimented you on those cabinets and the color before I do believe. What is the brand? They are so very nice.
So small. Unusual placement of the stove but I don't see what else to do with it.
Thanks so much, desertsun. A friend of mine hand-made the cabinets. He had never done any woodworking so he made them for just the cost of the materials (very inexpensive wood stained with Miniwax Wood Finish Red Mahogany 225) in order to get the experience. He also made the pantry doors, which match the cabinets but appear lighter in the photo because of the lighting.
The oven was originally built-in to cabinetry where the pantry is now located. And, yes, I lost some cabinet space but the result was worth it. There are a few more cabinets not shown in the photo.
