Some people are born with musical gifts, but they might never be developed because they are never exposed to music, or the parents can't afford lessons for him or her, or the religion they practice might discourage it. Some people are born with artistic gifts, but the person isn't ever exposed to fine art, allowed exposure to decorator magazines, or given enough means to purchase the things that appeal.

But yes,s some people are deaf taste-wise, the way some are tone deaf. But then, whose to say that there is a universal Good Taste?

yes we are born with it.

I have good taste since I was a child and knew how to match colors and put things together.

But your grammar says otherwise.

I used to love reading your posts - you have been pretty mean to people lately...not like you. What is going on with you?

Wow. More rudeness.

This thread has turned into nothing more than self-important people puffing out their chests and saying "I have good taste! And no one else does."

Give it a rest.

I don't think being exposed to "culture" equates to acquiring good taste. To me good taste in fashion or home decorating, or in buying furniture or cars is more akin to having some sort of artistic sense of what looks good. And the good taste of a century ago might not be the good taste of now. Artistic sensibilities change.

And while people might be able to see colors together or arrange furniture, or dress themselves well, I'm not sure those things equate to good taste either. For me it is an intangible thing, but once seen is appreciated.

yes, my grammar is not so great, I will have to go back to school...***but this thread is not about grammar***

but, I have been told by many, that I have good taste. I also did go to Pratt school of design in NY as well.....so maybe that helped a bit.

plus my aunts and mother all had magazine show room homes, as did a lot of the neighbors, so that influenced me greatly, I can also draw and paint....no my sister on the other hand, couldn't even do paint by numbers, even if she tried, and she did.....some have it, some don't......no big deal

and if you really want to see good taste, you need to talk to "cattknap", because I have seen pictures of her home, and I am packed and ready to move in....and I am not kidding....

Completely agree! I kept waiting for lots of people to chime in and say, "Wait a minute, taste is relative, culturally contingent, historically contingent, etc., so how can anyone be sure that they have what 'it' is?" Instead, people just went on about how great their OWN taste is. This thread reminds me of those people who post very unflattering pictures of poor/working-class people shopping at Wal-Mart just so they can snicker about how much better they are than the Wal-Mart shoppers.

people have to also realize that someone can have good taste, it just might not appeal to everyone.

it happens.

I like a lot of decorated homes I see, not for me to live in, but I know they are nice...
