I question the quality of Pier 1 furniture. Last month I was in the store and I noticed several furniture pieces that were marked down in price with "as is" on the sign. I could see chipped areas on the pieces, hence the markdown.
That's because they are display models and Pier 1 stacks the wood furniture on top of each other. Of course there would be chips. We don't treat our furniture at home like that Pier 1 treats its display pieces.
I saw a sectional sofa I really like and can't find it any place else except for pier 1. for some reason i can't get it to post on here . but they have 2 sectionals on their website the first one is the one ive seen so far and really liked. but now reading all this i am iffy.
One other thing to note about C&B is that they have some very high-quality rugs. I was looking for a modern shag rug and tried SEVERAL from multiple scores and returned them all because they either shed, or cheaped out on the material, or weren't plush enough. The one we got from them is AMAZING. We get compliments all the time and all our guests love to be on it barefoot haha.
Two furniture places to consider if someone likes C&B style are Younger Furniture and Room & Board. They both have some similar styles but are another notch up in quality from C&B, CB2, or West Elm. You pay for it but it is definitely worth it.
I have bought a few things from Pier 1 but I have been selective. Some of their accent furniture seems like overpriced garbage. I bought my kitchen table from them and it was a great deal IMO. Its unique and of good quality. I feel it was a steal for 200. The chairs that were available though seemed like junk so I didnt bother and repurposed my old chairs. I bought a headboard and footboard from them, another steal. Its always good to look around during their clearance peaks. My sister bought a sofa and its pretty comfortable.
Thanks, I also took a look at pottery barn and saw a few sofas I might be interested in. It's a kid free household so I wouldn't have to worry about extreme usage. I'm happy to hear CB2 and West Elm quality is pretty good.
I love my Pottery Barn dressers. They are very sturdy and strong. I actually bought a lateral file cabinet and it works!
I bought a TV stand from Pier 1, it is one that you can put your large TV in, and close the door and it looks like a pretty cabinet. I dont use it for a tv, but i use it for my craft closet. Its sturdy too and I am happy I bought it.
I bought some wrought iron side tables from Pier 1, with glass tops. again, excellent and pretty. I have not bought any upholstered furniture so I cant comment on that.
Our Pier 1 couch cushions started to compress beyond comfortability in about six months. The frame was sturdy, but everything else on it was junk. If you like the Pier 1 look, Cost Plus/World Market furniture is similar but seems slightly better made in many cases.
We've got some Room & Board pieces now that are utterly awesome, but yeah, they're a couple of price points higher than the other suggestions here.
