To be honest, while I'm sure the stone will look great, I think the brick looks great as well.
Agreed. I don't see stone being a $1000 improvement over the brick (some brick looks terrible, that brick seems to "work" in that space to me). But it's not my house

Ok peoples, you've helped me make up my mind. I'm sticking with the brick for the following reasons:
1) The stacked stone is lighter in color, and will probably wash out in the room. After looking at customer images, it looks too much like cement.
2) I'm afraid the stone may look like cheap veneer.
3) The fireplace/mantle, home theater speakers are going to hide 70% of the chimney anyway.
4) The brick is already there, so I won't have to do any more work.
5) I don't have to spend $700+ for materials.
6) I actually like the brick the way it is. (If it were that finished bright red 70's brick, this would be a different story, and I'd definitely cover it with stone).
I haven't been at this thread in a long time, but the pictures - and the room - are fantastic! You really did a nice job and you have a good eye for color combinations. Congrats.
