I think the TV above the fireplace is theeeeee most ugliest trend of all time.

In years to come, trust me, people will be saying, what were we thinking.

It really is just ugly. Guess it is good we have flat screens because if we had consoles like we did in the 70's where would it go.
yet no one had that problem back then.......seems like more people have fireplaces these days.

while the bracket thing is a good idea, the look of it hanging off the wall like that really is not appealing, it really does not look good at all.

The device is functional and clever and will no doubt suit the needs of some; a person in the house who likes the look of the TV above the fireplace and a person in the house who doesn't give a damn what the TV looks like can both be pleased. The former can simply leave the room when the latter uses the TV if it's that big a deal. And the latter can be considerate of the former and return the TV to it's HGTV mode above the fireplace when done watching.

Just on those table consoles they sell with the tv's. I just think they are too low and uncomfortable, I guess it's personal. I have always had my tvs higher when I can. At the moment I am waiting for my shelves to be put up to work around my tv and it's too low for now for me.

I have no need for such a thing because my TV is in an entrainment center on another wall, but I think it is a great idea to solve a problem when you have no other place to put the TV.. As far as the bracket being ugly, it is only unsightly when you are watching TV. Once you finish for the night, it goes back up and looks normal. No problem at all.
Our Bedroom TV is in an cabinet and we open the doors at night while watching TV. In the morning I make the bed and close the doors, so everything looks good. The fireplace mount wouldn't look good if left down ll the time, my BD TV wouldn't look good if the doors were left open all the time. It isn't, they aren't, so no problem.

Original post is spam. If you go to the "down and out" website you'll see they gave him $100 in exchange for making that post.

Rather than report it to the admins for deletion, I wanted to point out an alternative product that is much less costly:
MantleMount Height Angle and Rotation Adjustable Flatscreen TV Wall Mount

I have no affiliation with either company, I haven't even purchased a tv mount because I use a projection screen. I just happened to google "mantel mount" because a friend was talking about it and saw this thread was one of the top hits and since I have an account here I decided to mete out some justice.

I think pay-for-post is highly unethical (they are dishonest because they incent the poster to gloss over any downsides for fear of not getting their $100 and there was no disclosure that the poster was getting paid) so pointing out a better product is just deserts.

What "down and out" website?

In rereading his post, it does sound fishy.

On another note, we have ours over the fireplace. It looks fine. Looks like a dark mirror to me. We have no trouble viewing it as we are always stretched out in our recliners or on the sofa. Maybe if we were sitting up in straight back chairs we would have neck troubles.

Default Above fireplace works for us

We have a 50-inch TV above the fireplace. We find it very comfortable to watch. And, we can pull it out and rotate towards the kitchen while cooking.

Notice that it is tuned to house-porn channel.

Exactly.... Well.... actually watching TV is the ugliest trend of all time, but that's OT...

Besides, if you put the TV up there, where does the elk mount go?

I agree that above a fireplace is too high. I hope this solution works for you. For me, I'd probably leave it down all the time. Right now we never close our TV cabinet because the TV is on so much. I assume it would be the same for this.

It totally depends on the size and layout of both the room and the TV...this would work for some people I'm sure, but I'd really have to be in a hard spot to do this myself.

Actually I like the idea of a TV with a beautiful, ornate frame around it and pictures of great art rotating when it's not being watched. I saw this in a house and loved it and if I ever have to deal with "the only place for the TV is over the fireplace" problem I'll either go with this idea, or pass on the house.
