i was quoted $16500 for engineered hardwood on 1550sqft this includes carpet removal and labor plus wood on 12 steps. What do you think? What do you think that I should pay?

A couple years ago, I paid $10,000 for 1000 sq ft plus 8 stairs. That was for solid hardwood, not engineered. I'm not sure if there's generally much price difference between the two, but it sounds like your price per sq ft is only slightly higher than mine was.

You need to get at least 3 quotes from solid dealers. Get names from Angie's List or from friends who are satisfied customers. With several quotes you'll know a lot more. Be sure to ask for a quote with the same requirements for all bidders, and ask a million questions.

That's a little over $10.50 a square foot. When I lived in Kentucky that would be way too high, especially for engineered hardwood. Here in Northern Virginia, not so much, among other things skilled labor costs are outrageous. It really depends on the type of engineered hardwood and manufacturer, the quality varies a lot and the type of wood matters. Two dollars a square foot would be too much for some, whereas $10 a square for would be dirt cheap for another type and manufacturer.

Yeah, the cost of hardwood is skyrocketing, but it sounds a little high for engineered wood.

Break it down...
Cost of wood per square foot
Cost of install per square foot
Cost of removal of other stuff

$2.50/sqft is the going rate for generic installation down here through local stores (not big box) That would put your wood around $7.50/sqft. But installation prices can vary a lot depending on who you use and what materials they use.

Search/compare wood prices online.

Not sure because I haven't heard of it. There is a pro that gets on here sometimes that could give you a better idea.

This calculator might work or at least give you an idea if they are in the right ballpark.

Cost to Install Oak Flooring - 2013 Cost Calculator (ZipCode based)

According to it that estimate is about $3,000 over the high end for that square footage around here. I have no clue how accurate it is. I would definitely get additional estimates.
