Ours is that age and didn't affect our purchase once I found out that there was no asbestos used then. In the late 1970s it was banned and people have since been scared to death when they see a popcorn ceiling that it might contain asbestos, if older than 1980, because even the testing can cost a lot and removal is a very expensive proposition. We had 3,000 sf of it, and whenever we renovate a room we remove it. Dust and cobwebs stick to it and are very hard to remove without damaging it. There is a sand product that can be added to paint for a ceiling texture, it can be left flat, or in our case, I have a gun to spray texture that matches the "spatter" effect on the walls.
I bought a brand new home in 2008 and it had textured ceiling.
I don't hate them at all.
What I don't understand is why you all think you have to scrub them.
I use a Swiffer and and the dust comes right off.
I do like those beautiful tiles on the ceiling, that adds alot of character.
And the insulating factor for air conditioning is also good.
What do some people do that would cause their ceiling to get so dirty
that they would have to scrub them?
I don't know if the weight of those beautiful celing tiles in the picture would
be good for my ceilings though. They look real heavy.
But they are gorgeous.
We own a 1929 Arts & Crafts house. Although we do not have popcorn ceiling we have plaster walls and ceilings. Not smooth at all nor popcorny but granular with inconsistencies and some areas with cracks that the previous family repaired.
They are 10' high and yes, we do notice the beauty of the texture in this ceiling that makes it unique.
I do not get the appeal of popcorn ceiling. I realize this may have been popular decades ago I just do not get it. All three apartments I have lived in have this and I think it just looks tacky and lazy. That is what my dad used to say about popcorn ceiling it is a lazy way to get the job done. I like smooth clean finishes on paint jobs.
Popcorn ceilings are very 80's/90's. They go well with the shiny brass door knobs and ceiling fans. In my opinion they have always been a way out of a poor drywall job. I am in the process of having a house built and little did we know the contractor put textured ceilings in..ugh. We are already planning on scraping them.

Well, I had my ceilings popcorned 25 years ago when i bought my apartment. My ceilings were brand new totally smooth. I just didn't like them, to me, they looked like a big square blank in all the rooms.
So the appeal to me is, I have smooth wood floors, I have smooth walls so the ceiling gives the room some texture. My couch is leather, so all this smooth, there needed to be something rough. JMO.
I think it is so comical that a lot of people seem to think having a popcorn ceiling is the most God awful thing in life and they must scrub it off....
it is certainly not the most awful thing in life, but it is one of the ugliest interior finishes that was ever popular imo :P
LOL, I have to say "paneling", was the ugliest thing for interior homes.
and vertical blinds is headed up that way also. I hate them.
