Bought our house recently. It came with terrible wall lighting that my wife hates. I can't figure out if I should take it out completely, and put in shelving. Or, if I should put in different lighting. Any advice is appreciated.
If you want a shelving unit or bookshelves, then that is a pretty good option, especially if you have books in boxes waiting for a new home. You will have to deal with the wires, and I am sure an electrician here will advise you to do that. You can cap them and paint them.
You could hang a great piece of art, or do a wall of pics. What does your wife want to do with the wall?

Are they wired into that wall switch? If so, you can install a junction box there (has to remain accessible by code but you can put shelves there and put something in front of it) and run the wiring up to the ceiling for a chandelier or recessed lighting. An easier solution if you are not experienced is to just put an outlet there where the wires come out of the wall
and plus in a floor lamp, or under-shelf lighting after you install the shelves.
Everyone will come to your house for an eye test.. lol... great job in decorating the living room. Like the dark floors with light furniture and dark pillows.. you did such a good job I know you will pick just the right kind of light for the room. Look on the internet at options and see what you like and will match the decor.
LOL Interesting taste the previous owners had....Obviously the lights have to go.
I agree with Hemlock's suggestions.
