I am going to be in a temporary apartment while I house shop.
I will need to store one full boxsprings & mattress unless I
set up the extra bedroom in the apartment with a bed made up of a box spring & 2 mattresses.
My college age kids could also use it as a futon on the floor during the holidays.
Is there anything wrong with having a higher bed & double stacked mattresses?
Mattress manufacturers do not recommend this -- they design the mattress to lay atop a box spring (which has pretty firm top) or a platform, which is generally plywood. You will introduce a lot more instability.
Generally agree with Chet Everetts' comments with a few questions. What is the time frame for this arrangement and how long will the kids be sleeping on it? If it is short term ( a week) then I think you should be ok but I would not make this a long term solution for the reason Chet stated. If it will not be used then you should be ok for a longer period of time.
