I am writing this post on behalf of my mother who is searching for a company that will either reface or paint her kitchen cabinets (about 22 cabinets/drawers). Apparently when she renovated her kitchen years ago, the range-hood was not connected properly and thus dirt and grim collected on her cabinets. She cleans them constantly but not the varnish is peeling off and the cabinets don't look so good. She's had a few companies come out to give estimates but have all given different advice. One company said that she could have the cabinets cleaned and painted in her color of choice and all would be good for at least 10 years. While other companies said that the paint would peel off within 3 years and that she should have them resurfaced/refaced but quoted her at least 8k to do it. However Home Depot told her that painting was a waste of money and that it would probably cost 10k to reface the cabinets, she should spend a bit more and just get new cabinets. My mom can't afford to spend 8k on cabinets, she also needs a new floor and counter top. Can anyone give their opinion/experience with painting or resurfacing?
We've painted them. If you use the correct paint and properly prep the cabinets first, they will last a long time. My father's were good for over 10 years.
I have painted cabinets in several homes and if you do it right, use the proper paint it lasts a very long time. Now it depends on what type of cabinets. Are the frames and doors wood? Or are they laminate? If they are laminate don't bother. I don't care what promises are made, paint simply doesn't not stick to laminate. Ever. I don't find it peels, it more less just scratches off.
When I bought my house the cabinets were already painted. They had been painted for almost 8 yrs at that point. There was nothing wrong with the paint, I simply tired of the color (they did a country distressed look that I was getting tired of). I repainted everything white. It is time intensive when you do it properly. If your mother hires someone that knows what they are doing she shouldn't have to worry about the paint job for many yrs.
I can't speak of refacing. Ive heard good and bad about it. Most retailers that sell cabinets are going to tell you to replace.
