However, apparently this stone wasn't quartzite - it behaved much more like marble. It etched easily if anything acidic touched it (vinegar, pickle juice, wine, etc). It also scratched easily. This was very upsetting because this is one of the main work areas in the kitchen. The second photo is of etching due to a very small splatter of lemon juice. NO BUENO!

Our contractor is good for her word, though, and she replaced the top at no cost to us - she asked what we wanted and after a lot of consideration, we decided to go with teak - and our new island top was delivered today! This is the third photo.

I think it looks amazing. It really warms the room up -with travertine floors and soapstone counter tops we had a lot of stone going on anyway.

It is a shame about the stone because it was beautiful. But the teak is beautiful, too.

Thank you!

We were able to keep the stone top and we'll be using it in our outdoor living space when we start building on it later this year. It will get scratched and stuff but it will be OK outside and we think it's beautiful so we are happy it's not a total loss.

That's even better that they allowed you to keep the stone. It will look great as an outdoor kitchen top.

PS - Your toilet paper is coming off the roll in the wrong direction .
The can lights do seem to spread the light out nicely, but the florescent gave a lot of light. I'm holding my opinion in reserve because the final lighting will be led and they are temporary incandescent now. There will also be four pendants lights over the counter and under-cabinet lighting along the wall o' cabinets.

I have no say on TP direction...

I like the teak better, and I think it's excellent that you found a use for that gorgeous stone.

So we want to go from a 24"-->30" stove and a 24" DW-->18" DW. Aside from the annoyances because they are directly next to each other, there shouldn't be any actual issues/changes to pipes/lines, correct?

You're going to have to pull both of them out and just make sure of where the connections are and be sure they are going to "match up" with your stove and DW. They probably will but it's not a guarantee.

That's what I am hoping. It's hard because of the size of the kitchen, we can't really pull things out until we are ready to go. I think the guy who was here could tell that the stove would be okay but who knows about the DW. I'll see what my dad says when he comes by next week.

Ignore the awful paint job around the window. (Not done by me but hopefully to be fixed!) For the bathroom and I plan on putting some of that DampRid in there.
