Tile shower is failing and entire bath is being redone--have gotten three guys in to work on bids...
have spoken with the cabinet design people (not cabinet makers) from two of them--
one company uses Mid Continent brand of cabinetry--
read some reviews on Gardenweb Home forum--more from 2008-2012--mainly positive but another site had some pretty negative reviews about quality control and construction of interiors...
One guy left brochures for Designer's Choice and Bishop Cabinets--didn't find much on either except Bishop is smaller, family owned-run company in AL that is supposed to provide quality product--no idea about cost...
we are getting rid of the original faux marble tub and putting bigger shower across that end of bathroom...
taking out original shower in corner and adding cabinetry there and in area outside this space where the dual vanity is...
don't want cheap cabinets cause know they won't hold up BUT also don't want to pay mid-level, semi custom price and get cheap cabinets...
any info on any three brands appreciated...
think one guy might also have local cabinet guy price the work and know that can be better quality and reasonable...
Just don't want to source another GC to give a bid...and start all over
On my house I use local custom cabinet makers. It's not much more expensive and I get the finish and design I want. A few hundred bucks when you want three side drawers and a seating area but can't find anything remotely of quality I'm gonna pay for it. You get better hinges, slides and build quality. And not to mention it looks better, and you're gonna live there a while. Most of the bathroom cabinets out there being sold are crap. Built with MDF and some crappy veneer.
Tell the builder you want plywood cabinets. That will automatically set you in a different price and quality bracket
We found custom cabinets made in our contractor's woodworking shop were the least expensive alternative that gave us EXACTLY what we wanted. Our vanity is a non-standard width; our linen closet is a non-standard height/width/depth. (In addition to being storage, it functions as a divider wall between the vanity and the toilet.) The contractor's cabinetmakers worked with our measurements and we got the absolute maximum storage space out of the available floor space and ceiling height (cathedral ceiling).
Sometimes custom makes the most sense, aesthetically and also economically for the value received.
We bought cabs from a local kitchen shop. You can inspect the cabs yourself to make sure of the quality. I'd do research online first, to educate yourself. Also, when you talk to people who sell cabs, have them demonstrate the quality features. You want solid wood doors, for one thing, and veneered shelves and sides over plywood. Also check the hinges and handles.
Good luck!
