I'm tempted but I have some wonderful Christopher Radko and other artist glass ornaments I would hate to see broken. And besides next year would have to unfold everything and special ornaments would surely break then.
All my ornaments go back into their original boxes if I have them. If not, they are wrapped in tissue and put in new boxes with packing peanuts.
I had a fake tree at one time. I got rid of it for two reasons....my cat.. and I didn't feel like devoting what little storage space I had to the tree.
It is an 8 footer and moves to the attic lock stock and barrel. So far no broken ornaments. Fireplace wreath, over the door arches, .... All is mounted on plywood cut puts sprayed in gold and gets moved in minutes.
I had a friend who married a divorced man with 3 kids. Their first Christmas together she asked him how to dispose of the Christmas tree. "Oh I just take it in the woods out back"
OK so she takes down all the ornaments and lights and hauls it to the woods. There she finds a pile of 3 Christmas tree skeletons all with ornaments and strings of lights plus angels on top. She couldn't believe he actually wasted money every year buying ornaments, lights and angels and just threw it all away. He said he thought that is what everybody did.
Eventually she and the ex wife were discussing something to do with the kids when the ex asked if she could please have the tree topper she inherited from her mother which was left in the attic with all the Christmas decorations. Stupid man didn't even know what was in the attic and never questioned where decorations came from or were stored. Turns out he was clueless about a lot of things.
Gosh, that's an innovative way of dealing with it. Our Christmas tree is a real evergreen, so we we remove the lights and ornaments and put them away each year. With only a few exceptions, all ornaments return to their original packaging and are packed into a large bin with the light strands, the tree skirt, & a decorative pillow. The lighted wreath from the front door goes in its own box. The tree stand simply hangs from a hook in the basement. It takes maybe 1-1/2 hours to carefully pack everything, cut up the tree for removal to city compost, and vaccuum up any leftover needles from the carpet. It's effort than looping plastic wrap around a Christmas tree, certainly, but still not overwhelming.

We are retired military, so old habits die hard ( you never knew if you would move before the next Christmas). So we wrap every ornament in tissue, or put in it's original box, and then it goes in a tub. The tree goes back in the original box. All other season decorations are also wrapped and put in boxes/tubs. A good portion of my attic is dedicated to Christmas storage!

This is my story also. Tubs and original boxes for almost all things. When we moved the movers asked if I had just purchased the stuff!!!!
My sister has garlands throughout her home and she has installed closed cup hooks on them. She bought several dowels and brackets and when she takes them down, she simply slides the dowels through the hooks and hangs the garlands on the brackets, which are in her basement. She then has a shower curtain that hangs over all of them to keep them as dust free as possible. She barely has to fluff them each year.
Christmas take down is a labor of love for me. I have between a 9 - 10 foot tree with much width and it is jammed with ornaments, lenox, radko, etc, so it takes days of wrapping and boxing. I am always sad when Jan. 6th comes, not sure if it is because Christmas is over or the boat load of work ahead of me.
We have two of those, as well as two others made by a different company. I like the ones linked above a bit better than our original boxes. We've never had a broken ornament using these.
