What's the fascination with a bar in the basement?

It's called a man cave. We have one with a full kitchen and bathroom with a walk-out to the pool. We use it all summer long.
Thats the way to do it,sounds great..
Seems all my friends tend to socialize these days out in a back yard patio and do the BBQ thing rather than use their basements for entertaining..In the winter we tend to sit around the kitchen or living room when drinking beer and playing cards,After a few years basements tend to become over run with storage/stuff .
I know my son considers the dry basement in his rental condo....to be "his room". He has a small 2 BR two story apt and has nicely decorated the LR and kitchen and the 2 bedrooms are all set up.......but he considers the basement to be his because it can be as casual as he chooses. He can play his music and not worry about disturbing neighbors....He is putting up a dart board and would probably like a little fridge for beer... (like they have in dorm rooms); If he had a pool table it would go there...his exercise bicycle is down there....its his space. _If it had a wet bar with stools....and a lava lamp he would be in heaven.
Growing up in the upper Midwest bars in basements were very common in my neighborhood. As tweens and teens the basement was our hangout during the winter months. Some of the parents kept sodas and snacks in the bar for us kids, but after one parent walked in on a couple of really drunk 14 year olds almost everyone put a lock on the liquor cabinet.

Other people I know installed full kitchens in their basement instead of a bar.

When I was a teen many of my friends parents had half of the basement finished and some with a bar.
It was where we as kids and teens could go and listen to music, snack, talk etc... but a parent would
also check on us. Since we had winters, it was a warm place to get together.
We also had a basement (half finished, no bar) with a pool table, dart board, tv and sound system
where my teenage kids could bring their friends.
It also came in handy when our parents had their cocktail parties and the children of the guests & us
could play and the grown ups didn't have to be careful about what they didn't want their children to hear.
Also, many of my friends parents also had a second stove in the basement (needed for the large
holiday dinners).
As someone said, what is old is new again.
