I do not remember what brand of appliances they were, but I just saw a slate refrigerator and range and they were beautiful. I predict that slate will take over as the new "in" color.
It was a nice matte finish, sort of halfway between stainless and black.
GE offers an appliance suite in slate. I really wanted that color but ended up with stainless as they did not offer a counter depth refrigerator in slate (at that time anyway), and that was a must for our small kitchen. Not sure if the color will catch on or not. Will be interesting to see.
SS is having a great run- longer than any other dominate appliance color other than "white".
GE started the "slate" thing a about 3yrs ago. Their "marketing" strategy for the color (which went through a few incarnations) was a bit unorthodox- see link below.
And now that they're owned by Electrolux I suspect they'll tone-down/scale back its availability.
I remember seeing some slate appliances prominently featured in stores a couple of years ago.
Now they've either been moved to the side or disappeared from the displays altogether.
I think Viking did a nice dark grey with a more matte finish a few years ago. I always thought it was very attractive- especially with the chrome/stainless pulls. If I was remodeling and had the $ I would have definitely given it a look.
hen again I also liked the bronze look Jenn Aires.
I'm really surprised none of the appliance companies have made a push towards offering at least one ore two colors to see how they sell. I know GE was thinking about it with that semi-retro line but when I checked their site still had not committed.

I thought about getting the Whirlpool White Ice appliances that were also discussed on K'ledgeBldr's link. But I had to go to multiple stores to see one on the floor which made me worry that they were not popular enough to have staying power, and what if I need a new fridge in 7 years and they don't make White Ice any more? I wouldn't want to have to replace other appliances that were still working fine in order to have matching appliances, but I would also not be happy with a mishmash of colors.
So I stuck with with stainless, knowing that as things get replaced down the line, everything can continue to coordinate.
I would assume many people would have similar concerns regarding slate or whatever else is going to be the next big thing in appliance colors, accept that it never gets off the ground.
I saw the slate when we were looking to replace the fridge.......full disclosure- I never was enamored with stainless steel, and when I replaced my appliances about 15 years ago, I went with white. I do like white.
I needed to replace the fridge and went with Stainless. The other appliances have not been changed ( if it aint broke don't fix it especially with appliances. they really don't make them like they used to). We are planning to sell within the next few years, and at that time (if the older appliances still survive) I will replace them and go with stainless just to be consistent.
Slate was nice, but I didn't think it was anything special and figured too that matching would be not so easy.
I too had hopes for the bronze line way back when but that kind of fizzled so I just don't know.
I agree that stainless doesn't have the high end panache associated with it that it used to when it was newer and fresher, but it ain't going anywhere soon. If anything, it seems white is making a bit of a comeback.
