I forgot to comment on the faux finishes in my initial post. I absolutely agree that they are out as far as wall treatment. But those fake wood porcelain and ceramic floor tiles are very popular.
I have these as my master bathroom flooring. I consider it a linear design rather than something that is supposed to look like wood but someone who was visiting made a comment about thinking they looked like wood.
I kept looking at the date of this article, because most of these things have been out for some time. As others have said brass has been out for so long, it is almost back in (in or out I don't like it). Desks in kitchens ended a while ago. I have never had one, but it actually sounds like a good idea. I also still like the home office. Paper work still needs to be filed, we still have a printer, and we still have some work that is not possible on a tablet or phone.
I think a lot depends on the style of the home of course. Ours is craftsman and i don't think polished brass would look very good at all. I don't like it anyway.
I had wanted a desk in the kitchen for years, finally got one, don't know what to do with it now.
I imagine it would be handy for menu planning. I do mine at the dining room table, but a small desk in the kitchen would be great. My current kitchen has all the essentials, but there's no room for anything else, certainly not a desk.
Some of those "trends" have been out for quite some time now. Brass has been out for so long that it's coming back in.

I have cook books, pens, note paper, etc stored in it. It is handy for that. If the house didn't have a home office, I'd love the kitchen desk. It does, though, so it is a little redundant. It would have been great to have at our last house!
and boy, is the color they picked for this year awful. Marsala (sort of a mauve red/brown) this year, "Radiant Orchid," which was equally bad, last year.
Actually, Pantone (another organization that forecasts color trends) chose Marsala...CMG chose Tribal Red:
I'm liking Tribal Red too. A lot! That's the color of one of the walls in my living room which I painted years before I heard the term "accent wall." They're probably out too.
