When they last refinished the floors of my house, they only did the edges, and left the original finish in the middle. So, instead of refinishing the floors again, I'm just going to put down area rugs, to hide the different colored wood in the middle. (I only plan to buy $300-300 oriental-like rugs you'd find at Lowe's or Home Depot, not real oriental rugs that would cost thousands.) But, a room that somewhat has me stumped is the back parlor.

Here it is:

It is a rectangular room, but has a fireplace/mantel that chamfers one corner. So, if I put down a rectangular rug, that corner of the rug will run all the way to the insert, covering a lot of the original tile.

At first, I thought I could fold a rug under, and buy padding the same thickness as the rug for everywhere else. But, that would likely crease the backing, and eventually destroy that corner of the rug.

Do you have any better ideas? Should I just suck it up, and assume that the rug will eventually be ruined?

Set the rug on the diagonal so that one edge is parallel to the tile. Find the largest one that fits. Then add a second rug if needed at the opposite corner of the room.

You could also go with an oval rug, from a braided rug to an oriental. (links provided as examples, not decor suggestions).

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

I like the idea of laying a large rug diagonally. After measuring, I see I can fit an 8x10 rug, with the 8' side parallel with the tiles, and centered on the mantel. Then, I'd get 3 identical, small, neutral colored rugs (maybe jute/natural fiber?) for the remaining 3 corners, to lay under the 8x10 rug.

Thoughts? Any more ideas?

Get an inexpensive oriental-patterned piece of wall to wall and have it cut to fit your odd size and have the edges bound.

The furniture layout would be nicer as well. Sounds good. You might not even need the smaller rugs but you'll be able to tell after starting with the larger one.
