Well, here's what I think I'm going to do.

Front Room:

Arrange the chair and two sofa beds in a square and put my storage ottoman in the middle to serve as a makeshift coffee table. Place a small area rug, or even a few pieces of linoleum tile (painted to look like wood or in another solid color) under the ottoman to pull the look of the room together. I also think I'm going to buy two standard sized bookcases and transfer the items I'm not keeping in and on that bulky dresser to one of the bookcases. Then, I think I'm going to ask the apartment if they will remove the remaining furniture that came with this place. If I don't think the bookcase is sturdy enough, I may just opt for a desk with storage instead. I think I'll check out the local second-hand stores and see what they have.

I've also considered the idea of getting some removable wallpaper in black and white or black and gray stripes and putting those up to add some variety to the walls.

I'm still debating about whether or not to hang a curtain or shade to further divide the room visually. It would provide plenty of privacy.

Kitchenette:

This one's easy. I would need some tall chairs, and I could turn my miniature chest freezer into a makeshift island. I could either leave the rest of the kitchen open or maybe complete the rectangle by putting up a small card table next to the chest freezer. I think the table that the apartment came with is a bit bulky, and the chairs that fit it are too short for the makeshift island. I might be able to make it work, though, by just putting the table beside the island, if they are of similar height and width.

"Bedroom" Study Closet, or Book Nook:

Since I'm planning to move the table and move the sofa bed to the front of the room, I'll have room for another bed, and since these sofa beds aren't that comfortable that might be what I will use it for. I think a cot with a good memory foam mattress is a good option for now. It will give me the option to fold it up when it's not in use. I also may have a little room for a small comfortable chair and desk that I can use to study, plan lessons, or charge my laptop. I may also just throw in a bean bag chair for the sake of nostalgia and for when my friend's kids come over. Of course, the other bookcase will be used to partially conceal the book nook and visually divide it from the kitchenette and dining area.

Vanity and Closet:

I think I'm going to leave things pretty much the way they are in this room; it's very tiny. I might get a curtain with a tension rod, though, to visually divide it from the "bedroom" area.

You asked for ideas; you got ideas; and then you posted what you are going to do. What else do you want?

The dresser is too chunky, and things aren't laid out the way I want. Is it weird to be almost thirty and like sleeping on bunk beds?
Yes, kind of odd, but I understand. My son has sensory processing disorder, which makes him want to be in enclosed spaces. Lots of people on the autism spectrum have sensory issues. Maybe you'd like this. It would also sort of hide you bed during the day.

When my friend lived in a studio, she had a futon couch and futon chair. She slept on the couch and a guest could sleep on the chair. Being older now, I don't think I could sleep on a futon every night. If you have the space, I'd try to have a separate bed and couch.

I think it's odd to consider having a roommate in such a small space. There would be no privacy. You don't need a second bed. Any piece of furniture should serve 2 purposes. A fold out couch or futon would provide space for a guest. They even make a fold out chair and a half that is the size of a twin bed.

Off topic, but since your other thread is closed, I feel I need to point out how much money you are considering spending on new furniture, while also saying you can't afford to see a specialist for a diagnosis. It's all about priorities.

I may not do all of the decorating right now, but I needed some motivation to clean this place and make it look more presentable. Cleaning is the first step to re-decorating, so I thought I would be as detailed as possible with my new plan to psych myself into doing the first part of that task that I apparently hate so much--cleaning.

As for expenses, if I buy anything right now, it might be from a second-hand shop.

I also checked out a few of the links sent to me concerning ASD and emailed someone who can hopefully help. It's not so much paying for a specialist; chances are I wouldn't have all of the money right away and would have to save for it over time. It's really more about finding someone who will listen closely enough to determine whether I may have ASD or not. I might go through a thorough self-diagnosis first, unless I just want to trust that the doctor will trust the student diagnosis. My main reason for wanting a professional diagnosis is so that I can qualify for special services, like social skills training, that would probably help me tremendously. There are other options, though, I guess. I could probably learn some social skills training from academies of comedy or acting schools. Acting is a big no-no where I live, though, so I've had some trepidation about taking that route. Plus, it's not intended for people with ASD, so it might not be that effective.

I don't know about that. I'm glad you checked the links.

You can't learn social skills from comedy or acting classes. Why do you only focus on weird things to solve your problems when there are actually trained professionals who teach social skills to people on the spectrum??

Probably because they only teach the "politically correct" version of social skills, which is probably useless. I know how to recognize a simple facial expression and understand basic sarcasm, but I don't know a lot of the advanced stuff, like certain forms of humor, that just seems to come naturally to some people. I'm also not that aware of myself and how I'm perceived. I don't understand why you think it's weird. Some comedy schools even have improv designed for people who are on the spectrum. Plus, I get the idea that comedians understand social awkwardness very well.

Now, let's get back to the original topic; I wanted some tips on re-decorating this apartment.

I'm not positive, but it might be around 400 square feet.
