I am tired of neutral wall colors.

Most people want to live in the black and white part of The Wizard of Oz, and a few of us want to live in the colorful part.

Barn doors...all that big ugly exposed hardware just turns me off. I cringe every time Joanna Gaines puts one in, and the homeowners go gah-gah over it.

It isn't even that they are ugly, but they are a trend that will probably not stand the test of time. They are also being put into houses that aren't suited to barn doors.

Agreed. I've had granite contertops and backsplash (and two garden windows lined with granite tiles) for almost 10 years and do nothing more than wipe it all down with Clorox wipes regularly. It still looks as good today as it did when it was first installed.

Fake anything, but most of all I hate seeing are the mass produced "designer" items from chain stores that lack any character, or meaning and are simply there to fill a space.
Pink rooms for girls and blue for boys.
Art hung way too high, or Kinkade kitsch.
Vinyl mini blinds.
Lots of people lack refined taste, they decorate their homes to keep up with trends or impress their friends. Also, I noticed - lots of people, when they move to a new place, or buy a house - they hurry up and completely "decorate" it in just few weeks. They buy "trendy" products, that are widely popular, and in everyone's homes.
Trends come and trends go. People buy often and a lot, but substandard products, and don't have high expectation for those items.
Just curious...what would you consider an example of a well-decorated home in good taste??

I admit it - I'm one of those people who decorates with trends and for looks, rather than have everything take on some deep meaning. I do have meaningful items but they don't always fit my vision for what I want my home to look like. But I don't think I lack "refined taste". I am however fickle and I get bored easily, so I like to have affordable trendy items that I can change up when fashions change or I get tired of them. If I had unlimited budget, I would invest in expensive materials and items every time but I can't. I don't like antique or traditional styles and enjoy fun, modern things - same for clothing.

How about huge big wall clocks? Tired of that already.

And of course any sofa art that matches the color of the room. Aren't we glad the masters didn't have to contend with that. Sure they did have to contend with tptb but at least they didn't have to match the couch.

I agree w/some (many) of the other posts, have to add: chalk painted furniture!! IMO, it's ugly. There is someone in my FB yard sale group that ruins beautiful antique pieces by chalk painting them (sometimes leaving some parts the beautiful original) - it looks old and dated IMO (and she wants really high prices)

I feel the same way. So many times, I see really beautiful homes, to my taste, but it's just so obvious that they were "officially" decorated. Like they chose a theme and let a decorator do it, or even them themselves. I kind of prefer to let it happen as you go along. You see things you love and you add it to your home.

framed prints, throw cushions etc with 'inspirational' slogans or just stupid text like 'love' or 'adventure', with arrows drawn everywhere - yuck
Live Love Laugh

Also gray - my gosh, I hate to break it to people, but gray is tricky at best. Usually it just looks - well - gray. That big mushroom colored sectional looks like a cross between a gigantic fungal growth in the rain forest and an elephant.

Dark, dark hardwood floors. All I can say is - kids and pets don't go too well with that idea.

Fake midcentury modern. Look, if you want REAL midcentury modern, then bring back the matadors, the gigantic lamps with hideous lamp shades, and the mustard colored shag carpet. Most midcentury modern stuff was, well, ugly. I lived through it once and now I'm being forced to live through it again!

Five thousand pillows everywhere. Stop it already. And stop chopping the middle of them down to make two pointy things. It doesn't make your place look any more sophisticated.

Pick classics instead. I have a lot of the same furniture I had thirty years ago, because most of the pieces are antiques. And the newer stuff I've bought (leather sofas, for instance) are in classic colors and shapes. I switch out rugs and throw pillows and occasionally lamps for an updated look because that's a whole lot less expensive than replacing living room furniture. I can afford to be trendy when it comes to accessories but it can get pretty darn expensive otherwise.

And besides that, I love my antique dining room table, and buffet, and armoires, and trunks, and dressers. And no, I don't use trunks as coffee tables or end tables or to display quilts or anything like that - I use them as trunks - at the foot of a bed, for bedding.

Speaking of antiques, someone else mentioned chalk paint - BLECH!!! SO sick of that look! I'll expand that comment to include "shabby chic."

Personally, I will simply not paint over nice wood. Now - some piece I find at a garage sale that was ugly wood to begin with - that's a different story. But I generally won't put anything like that in a main area of my house - a kid's room maybe, or a bathroom, but in the main living areas, I'm going classic.

Yep, hate those and I agree they are a trend that is going to go out of style and end up looking VERY dated.

My personal contribution to the thread is wood look tile. Get tile, get wood, both have their pros and cons. But why mimic wood with tile? You can make amazing and unique designs in tile, take advantage of that.

And distressed anything. It used to be that when stuff started to look old and dirty and chipped and stained, it was time refinish or replace. Now they take brand new stuff and work hard to make it look old and dirty and chipped and stained. I don't get it.
