I did the same in my living room. I went with 90 watt 1000 lumen LED's for the down lighting for my 10' ceiling. They run right at 75% during the evening. During the day when the light is brighter outside I can crank the lights up. It's all about how your eyes adjust.
FYI to anyone looking for a dimmer. I would highly recommend something like the Lutron Maestro dimmer. It has programming capability to adjust to your LED lighting. Some LED's dim at different levels. With some slide dimmers you can only go down to maybe 30-40%. With the Maestro you can set the brightest and lowest level your LED light can handle without flickering or cutting out. With mine I was able to to pretty much match my Ecosmart Par38 90W to an incandescent bulb dimming. BTW the Ecosmarts dim very smoothly.

You can link up to 10 of these for a room. That means you can dim from multiple locations.
