I just hired a re modeler to come up with some designs for a kitchen redo. During our initial consultation he suggested putting the kitchen sink in the island. That was the first time I had ever heard of that and frankly it seems odd to me. Apparently he has been doing that a lot on re models. Anyone have this set up? and what do you feel are the pros and cons?
I have seen this often, in new homes and in remodeling. Several of my friends have their sink in the island.
It is just personal preference, but I don't care for it. I prefer my island to be one big surface for food prep. It is nice to have the space for cookie sheets, rolling out pie crust and other types of preparation that require a larger area.
Also, I find that kitchen islands are nice for serving food for informal buffet style parties.

Islands with sinks generally are in open floor plans and kitchens without windows to look out of while doing dishes. The rental I'm in now has that set up. Same with the new build. The island is quite large and you don't really lose any significant space for baking/working etc.
The new build island is the one I prefer. It is one large rectangle with no raised shelf.
The one in this rental has this \__/ <--- sort of shape. Also has a shelf top. It pretty much is useless as it makes the counter portion the same size as the rest of the counters along the wall. Yeah, it's good for putting things up there, but I would rather have a wide surface to spread out while working. The new build will give me that. Edit to add: the sink is in the center bend.
Also, without a sink along the wall, I gain extra upper cabinets.
Along the lines of what the others have said. It would depend upon how much other counter space I had before I would go that way but it can be handy if you have the room.
Yes the counter space is an issue. I think that is why he suggested it. It would free up the space where the sink was and the empty space above the sink could have extra cabinet space. i have googled pictures but it still looks so out of place.
When I moved into my new home the sink was in the island that had a raised counter. One of the first things I did was to flatten out the countertop. The counter is now a flat surface of about 6X4.5. with a sink. I like having the sink there so like others have said I can have more space for upper cabinets. Now if I can just train myself not to let the counter to become a dumping ground for my purse, mail etc. it would be great.
Have it, AND more than enough room for absolutely ANY kind of baking prep (on just half). Never seemed weird or wrong to me, different not looking out a window, but that's it. My folks also have a island with the main sink (facing a 2-story bank of windows, none at the back of the kitchen).
Not sure what the issue is, but maybe it's simply due to the size of the island:
I didn't make it this way, was the PO doing the remodeling (the only things I've done in this room are the floors, wall paint and lights)

Me too.... 5'x13' island w/ sink and 'gorgeous' view out 14 windows. abundant storage below; 7 base cabinets.
Plumbing vent was tricky when I built, but now there are 'blind vent' options. Just used one last week in. Remodel.
Island gets a lot of use as buffet / serving with guests. Lots of use as eating / meeting every day. (Such as right now), wireless devices improved the use!
