My GF and I are finalizing our master and guest bath renovation plans.
She's all about the grey subway tile for the surround, like this:
I just can't keep from getting a "sterile" feeling from it. Not that it's horrible, but I think of the contractor white tile/white grout showers we grew up with and it just feels.... low end, even with grey tiles.
This is what I've become a fan of -- the "stone" look. But am I being short-sighted with this?
I'm really tired of subway tile everywhere. And the pic of it you showed is WAY too much of it. Very blah color, and with the light grout it just looks stupid to me.
I understand how you feel. There is a fine line between clinical and clean lines. I still think it is the best choice for my kitchen backsplash, but I intend to use handmade ones which have a bit of texture and irregularity in the edges and on the surface.
You can get tiles that look like stone, thereby getting the cleaning convenience of tile without giving up the aesthetic of stone. I, too, don't like the use of subway tiles in the home.
Subway tile can be beautiful in the right setting - it's all a matter of personal preference. Personally I prefer stone or rougher tile in a shower area because it's less slippery, but it is also not as easy to clean as smooth subway tiles, so it's six of one and a half dozen of another.
I prefer the look of the stone in the pictures you posted, but I might like the look of subway tiles in a different bathroom or setting. I'm not hating on any particular tiles or finishes or counter types or floorings - other than cheap laminate flooring or Formica counter tops! And even then, I bet I would like Formica in some kitchens or bathrooms somewhere.
It all depends on the setting and the rest of whatever is going on in the room and in the house.
I never cared for subway tile. I like stone or textile type tiles and penny round mosaics
